2024 Boehringer Ingelheim – WCABP Veterinarian of the Year Award

Saskatchewan’s Dr. Nathan Erickson named bovine veterinarian of the year by the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners

February 14, 2024
– Dr. Nathan Erickson of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatchewan has been named the winner of the 2024 Veterinarian of the Year Award, presented by the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners (WCABP) and Boehringer Ingelheim Canada. He is recognized for his pivotal research into optimizing calf immunity, his tireless commitment to the veterinary profession and his impact as an educator of the next generation of bovine practitioners.

The Boehringer Ingelheim WCABP Veterinarian of the Year Award honours a veterinarian for being a leader in advancing bovine health, and for demonstrating a strong commitment to veterinary practice, the cattle industry and the veterinary profession, specifically in Western Canada. Dr. Erickson was announced as the winner at the conclusion of the WCABP annual general meeting in Calgary on Jan. 18, 2024.

“WCABP is delighted to honour Dr. Nathan Erickson as the Boehringer Ingelheim 2024 WCABP Veterinarian of the Year,” said Klea-Ann Wasilow, DVM and 2023 President, WCABP. “He has contributed so much to the cattle industry, veterinary profession and our association. It is fitting his contributions be recognized and celebrated.”

Dr. Wasilow added that Dr. Erickson has earned great respect within the bovine veterinary community in his role as cattle producer, clinician, consulting veterinarian and dedicated researcher. “His easy-going, approachable nature allow many to learn from him not only in an academic setting but out in the field and simply through casual conversation,” she said. “His impact is impressive.”

Dr. Erickson is Associate Professor, Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM). He brings a unique perspective to this role drawing on his experience as a cattle owner and his previous work in a beef cattle consulting practice. This gives him a deep understanding of the bovine industry which is essential in the education of future bovine practitioners.\

As a researcher, his interests mainly focus on the efficient use of available products and management techniques to maximize the production of herds in a sustainable manner. He has done in-depth investigation into calfhood vaccination protocols with an interest in how to optimize calf immunity.

“I would like to thank the WCABP for this award. It is very humbling to have my work and effort in the beef industry recognized by peers,” Dr. Erickson said. “The WCABP is an amazing organization of bovine veterinarians, many of whom I count as mentors and friends; without these relationships the work that we do as researchers and educators could not be done. Even small interactions and short conversations can lead to important opportunities. I truly appreciate the advice, guidance, and input that I have received from so many great people.”

In accepting the award, Dr. Erickson acknowledged Mike Jelinski, DVM, of Veterinary Agri-Health Services, for nominating him for the award. He also spoke of the unwavering support he receives from his family as being paramount to his success.

Dr. Erickson is committed to advancing the veterinary profession and is currently a board member of the Canadian Association of Bovine Veterinarians. He previously served on the board of the WCABP. Through his extension work with WCVM, he frequently speaks at producer and veterinary continuing education seminars.

Derek Groff, Business Unit Director (Livestock) with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health Canada, explained the Boehringer Ingelheim WCABP Veterinarian of the Year Award recognizes exceptional leaders who are making significant contributions to the cattle industry in Western Canada while also demonstrating a strong commitment to the veterinary profession.

“Congratulations to Dr. Erickson for being recognized as the 2024 WCABP Veterinarian of the Year,” Groff said. “His extensive research into optimizing calf immunity serves to improve bovine health and welfare and addresses a high-priority topic for the cattle industry.”

Groff thanked the WCABP for its work to seek nominations and select the recipient of the award.
