News & Information

Since late April 2013 an epidemic of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) has been affecting swine herds in the United States. Up to now more than 370 cases have been diagnosed in over 14 states. This disease is new to North America and Canada has « not yet » been affected.

The Canadian Association of Swine Veterinarians and the Canadian Swine Health Board are in a process of raising awareness and the national strategy calls for diligence of all swine industry stakeholders. To help prevent this disease taking foot in Canada, early diagnosis is paramount and your members have an important role in this process as they may be called upon by swine producers. This year's recipient of the Boehringer Ingelheim WCABP Veterinarian of the Year award was Dr. Michael Jelinski from Airdrie, Alberta.

Mike grew up in Regina, SK and attended the University of Regina, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981. The following year he was accepted into the WCVM and graduated in 1986. His first employment was at Valley Veterinary Clinic in Drumheller where he worked for two years before moving to Crossfield, Alberta and joining Davis-Rairdan and Nagel. In 1993 he left Crossfield to follow his dream; starting a beef consulting practice to provide high quality animal health services to a limited clientele. This was the beginning of Veterinary Agri-Health Services.
