WCVM Student's Bovine Club

This year the Bovine Club has 90 members. Our first event of the year was a welcome back BBQ held on September 15. Many students and faculty members came out to enjoy the delicious burgers!

Once again the Humane Euthanasia Lab took place in early October with Dr. Chris Clark and Brad Hutchenson. Members were given an opportunity to learn the techniques of humane euthanasia and practice on cadavers. We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful fall day!

In October, Dr. Amelia Woolums gave a presentation about BRD in feedlot cattle and Mr. Harvey Welter of Saskatoon Livestock Sales presented a lunch time talk about the ins and outs of the auction mart and marketing cattle. Both talks were well received by the students and a follow up tour of SLS is planned for mid-November. Again this year the Club partnered with the Pathology Club to host an evening seminar on November 7th presented by Dr. Fritz Schumann on Bovine Field Necropsy Techniques.

New this year, the Club members have been invited to attend monthly Large Animal Clinical Sciences rounds hosted by the faculty. These talks promise to be very interesting and a great opportunity to learn further from our faculty members. So far we have heard from Dr. Chris Luby on the future of the Dairy Veterinarian based on information gathered in a survey this summer.

The Executive is working on an exciting line-up of guest speakers and labs for the upcoming year. We plan to bring back old favorites such as the Saskatoon Colostrum Company tour, Alberta Trip, Firearm’s Safety Course and AI certification as well as to introduce some new and exciting ones including a Nutrition series, hoof trimming lab and vet health and wellness sessions just to name a few. The Club looks forward to a fun-filled year and we appreciate the support of the WCABP, guest speakers and faculty that help us pursue and promote our interests in bovine medicine.

See you at the WCABP conference in January!

UCVM Production Animal Health Club

Hello from the UCVM Production Animal Health Club! We once again kicked off the year with a welcome back dinner and club information session in early October, welcoming many new faces to the club from the class of 2015. Dr. Gordon Atkins spoke of the benefits of becoming student members of WCABP and AABP.

In November we held our annual lamb sale fundraiser. As always, this was a great fundraiser for the club! We also held another favourite, homemade beef on a bun lunch for students and faculty. This event is always well received and we hope to continue to repeat it.

In early January, the PAH club was thrilled to team up with the WCVM Bovine Club for a tour and lecture at Feedlot Health Management Services (FHMS) in Okotoks, Alberta and a social night out. This event gave our members the chance to learn about FHMS, see the inner workings of a feedlot firsthand, and network with WCVM students. On January 18, the PAH club hosted Dr. Stephen LeBlanc, of the University of Guelph, who spoke on “Can cows be a little bit pregnant? Practical evaluation of the pregnancy test.”

In late January, we were proud to have 3 of our members deliver exciting case and research presentations in the 2012 WCABP/Merck Animal Health Student Case competition. Congratulations to Erin Shields (Class of 2012) and Meghan McCarty (Class of 2013) for their runner up awards in the competition!

Proposed upcoming events for the club are the Canadian Firearms Safety Course in March at the UCVM Clinical Skills Building, a number of guest speakers presenting on such topics as bovine nutrition, and a hands on ultrasound wet lab in April. We have also continued the UCVM PAH Educational Bursary this year, supporting students that wish to participate in educational opportunities in production animal health such as conferences and externships.

The 2011-2012 PAH Club Executive Members are:
President: Meghan McCarty (Class of 2013)
Vice President: Matt Kumlin (Class of 2014)
Secretary: Marissa Weleschuk (Class of 2014)
Treasurer: Jocelyn Gibson (Class of 2013)
VP Events: Steve Boyer and Jennifer Hewitt (Class of 2013)
First Year Rep: Megan Simard (Class of 2015)

We look forward to a continued partnership with the WCABP as our club develops! We are always looking for new ideas and suggestions. Please feel free to contact us at pahclub@ucalgary.ca.

Respectfully submitted,
Meghan McCarty, President
